True meditation is a journey inward — a sacred discipline that flourishes with dedication, simplicity, and grace. Here are key principles to help deepen your practice and bring lasting transformation:
1. Be Regular
Meditate twice daily—morning and evening—even if only for 15 minutes. Consistency builds inner strength and clarity over time.
2. Fixed Time & Place
Choose a specific time each day and a dedicated place in your home for meditation. Let it be clean, quiet, and sacred—a space that invites stillness.
3. Mental Cleanliness
Throughout the day, learn to starve negative thought patterns and nurture positive ones. Meditation deepens when the mind is light and free from agitation.
4. Company (Satsang)
Seek the company of the wise and spiritual. Stay away from influences that distract you from your path. As the saying goes, “Good riddance to bad rubbish.”
5. Tapas & Vairagya
Cultivate the spirit of tapas (austerity) and vairagya (dispassion). Step back from worldly distractions and keep your mind centered on the Divine.
6. Inner Preparation
Before you meditate, sit quietly for a few moments. Let go of all identities—I am not a husband, wife, employee... In that moment, there is only you and the Divine presence.
7. Guidance of a Guru
True meditation blossoms in the presence of a realized master. Seek guidance (upadesa) from one who has walked the path and knows the silence within.
8. Balanced Living
Practice moderation in all aspects of life. As the Gita says:
“This yoga is not for one who eats too much or too little, sleeps too much or too little. Balance is the key.”
Even the Buddha taught:
“The strings of a veena should not be too tight or too loose—only then does music arise.”
9. Ethical Foundation (Yama & Niyama)
Without a strong base of ethics and discipline, meditation cannot bear fruit. Practice:
Ahimsa – Non-violence in thought, word, and deed
Satya – Truthfulness
Asteya – Non-stealing
Aparigraha – Non-possessiveness
Shaucham – Cleanliness (inner and outer)
Santosha – Contentment with what is given
Tapas – Self-discipline
Swadhyaya – Self-study and introspection
Ishwarapranidhana – Surrender to the Higher Power
10. Live Dharma
Follow Dharma—the path of righteousness. Let go of Adharma—that which binds and disturbs.
11. Practice Forgiveness
Forgive all, including yourself. Let the heart become light and free. Compassion is the doorway to peace.
When practiced with sincerity, these principles prepare the ground for deep meditation and inner awakening. Let your practice be steady, simple, and sacred.
